Isuzu is a brand built on heritage and purpose. Founded in 1916, it stands among the oldest names in the Japanese automotive industry, earning a global reputation for reliability through decades of heavy, medium, and light-duty commercial vehicles. That same engineering philosophy has carried over into its consumer lineup, the D-Max pick-up and the MU-X SUV.
Recently, I had the opportunity to experience both the Isuzu D-Max and MU-X in Panama, not just on the road, but where it truly matters, off-road. Along the way, I also got a glimpse of what Panama has to offer, adding an unforgettable backdrop to an already exciting automotive experience.

A First Impression of Panama and Isuzu
The experience brought together automotive journalists from across Latin America, creating an ideal environment for shared perspectives and regional exchange. We were welcomed with a traditional Panamanian cultural showcase, offering insight into the country’s heritage and setting the tone for the days ahead.
On the Road to Gamboa
The following morning began early, with transportation provided by either the Isuzu D-Max or mu-X to Gamboa, a rainforest region located near the Panama Canal. The drive immediately highlighted the D-Max’s ride comfort and composure, even over extended distances.
The day included a guided boat tour through Gatun Lake and the Panama Canal, where massive cargo ships passed within close proximity to us. A brief stop at Monkey Island provided a glimpse of Panama’s wildlife, followed by an aerial cable car ride offering elevated views of the surrounding area.
After lunch, attention returned to the D-Max and MU-X with a dedicated photo session, allowing both models to be captured in a natural outdoor setting. The day concluded with a sunset beach display, where lighting conditions showcased the design and stance of the vehicles particularly well.
Safety, Comfort, and Daily Usability
The MU-X stood out for its emphasis on safety and refinement. It is equipped with seven airbags and an advanced ADAS suite that includes forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking. Improvements to the front and rear suspension further enhance ride comfort, making long journeys feel relaxed and controlled. The return drive into the city reinforced this, offering a calm, composed experience complemented by Panama’s nighttime cityscape.
Off-Road Testing: Where Isuzu Shines
The highlight of the trip came during off-road testing at a dedicated 4×4 facility. An obstacle course was designed to test traction, articulation, approach angles, and overall durability. Importantly, both the D-Max and MU-X were completely stock, exactly as they would arrive from the factory, and all testing was conducted on standard road tyres.
We received a technical briefing on the available off-road systems; the vehicles were put to work. Both performed impressively, but the D-Max in particular demonstrated just how capable it is in demanding conditions. Its ground clearance and chassis setup allowed it to tackle steep climbs, uneven surfaces, and articulation challenges with confidence.
Testing included both engine options available in the lineup. The 1.9-litre turbo diesel produces 149 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, while the 3.0-litre variant increases output to 190 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. In real-world off-road conditions, both engines delivered sufficient power and torque, even across high-difficulty obstacles.
Several challenges could have been completed in two-wheel drive with precise throttle control, but when mistakes occurred, engaging Rough Terrain Mode immediately corrected traction loss. Combined with 4H, or 4L, and the rear differential lock, the systems worked seamlessly to manage power delivery. During suspension articulation tests, the D-Max felt remarkably composed, select the appropriate mode and allow the vehicle to handle the rest.
D-Max vs MU-X: Two Personalities, One Capability
The D-Max has firmly proven itself as a true workhorse, robust, capable, and confidence-inspiring in demanding terrain. The MU-X, while packaged as a more family-oriented SUV, offers similar off-road capability with added comfort and refinement. Isuzu has successfully balanced durability with usability across both models.
Final Thoughts
The Isuzu Experience concluded with dinner overlooking Panama City. Local refreshments were served as conversations with colleagues from across the region filled the air. Amazingly, bonds were formed and it was a bittersweet moment as we knew we had to soon depart for our respective countries.
Overall, the experience left a strong impression. While it is unfortunate that the MU-X is not currently available in our local market, the D-Max is, and it stands out as a genuinely impressive and capable vehicle.
A special thank you to Isuzu International Panama and Isuzu Trinidad & Tobago for making this experience possible.
